Karen McDougal is the kind of girl you can take home to show mom. Not knowing her resume, you might never guess she was topped by only Pamela Anderson as the favorite Playboy Playmate of the 1990s.

Karen kept Playboy honest with its slogan of representing the "girl next door" as she was named Playmate of the Year 1998. On her Web site, karenmcdougal.com, she even has a collector's edition doll from Playboy for sale. But mom would probably never suspect a thing.

Her look, although just as beautiful as any woman to ever appear in the magazine, has helped Karen McDougal the actress battle the constant problem of being typecast as the mistress, the prostitute, the stripper, etc.

"Is (the narrow typecasting) true? Yes, but it certainly doesn't concern me," she said in a recent chat.

"A lot of Playmates look like Playmates, but I look so girl-next-door and wholesome. For me, it is a lot easier to play the secretary or the nice girl, the mom... because I'm not really vampy. It would be nice to be. I'm certainly not cutting anyone down. We all want to be the sexy girl. My association with Playboy is great for getting the pretty girl roles but for anything more serious like hosting, not everyone likes that. There are exceptions like 'E! Wild On', but I've actually been turned down for jobs because I was in Playboy. Whatever. You win some, you lose some."

Her patience had paid off with small roles in movies such as "Charlie's Angels," "Joe Dirt," "Raising Helen," and "The Grind." She shared the lead role with fellow Playmate Lisa Dergen in a Roger Corman film called "The Arena." Karen has also hosted "E! Wild On" several times. She has modeled for "Muscle and Fitness" magazine, large national liquor campaigns, beer ads, catalogs, calendars, posters, etc. She was the first-ever woman on the cover of "Men's Fitness" magazine.

Asked where she wants to be in five years, she said, "If you had asked me that question five years ago, I would have said I would open a learning center for kids. That's going to be put off for a while as I hopefully host a sports show. I'm going to try really hard in the next year to get a job with a sports show, sort of extreme sports like LeeAnn Tweeden or Lisa Dergan do. I am very comfortable around boys and men. I get along with men a little better because women can be jealous and catty. In general, women don't like women. I like everybody, but it doesn't always work like that in the real world."

Karen received a lot of attention from her Playmate history because she taught pre-kindergarten previously. The "hot for teacher" angle was a juicy magnet for publicity.

"My three brothers did not like my being in Playboy at first. They said, 'We can't believe our little sister is taking her clothes off. Our friends are going to see it.' But now they're over it. They've seen a bunch of headshots. They don't want to see me naked. They've gotten so much attention from their friends that they feel like celebrities too. It's cute how they brag about me. They're proud no matter what I do."

It must have been tough for those boys to keep their buddies from lusting after little sis.

"My brothers just sort of agreed with their friends, played it off like, 'Yeah, man, she's hot but stay away from her. She's my sister.' They were, like, 'If you touch her, you're dead.' If any of their friends had ever approached me in that way, they probably would have killed them," she said.

The body count might have been high if all the boys who fantasized about Karen acted on those desires. She was, after all, so many hot teenage girl prototypes in one cute package: Cheerleader, volleyball player, softball player, and flag twirler in the marching band.

She's one of those people who look back on high school with fond memories.

"I had a great time in high school. I wouldn't change anything. It was amazing, a big part of my life and so much fun. I was small but never skinny. I just always had a nice physique, a nice butt and curves. I got a little space between my teeth fixed when I was in college. I had the big fluffy, feathered hair which is nasty but back then it was cool. I graduated in 1989. I may look different now but I'm still the same person. I'm more mature now and less shy -- that happens when you pose nude -- but I've always put the feelings of others first. I'm just very nurturing and love to take care of people."

Karen might be just another beautiful woman living a routine life if a friend had not persuaded her to enter a Venus Swimwear contest at a local club.

"I won, which I couldn't believe because I was a little insecure, but it was awesome," she said. She ended up winning the Michigan state finals and going to Florida, where she met a Playboy photographer.

Despite her willingness to shed her clothes and inhibitions, Karen said she isn't a real party girl and doesn't drink or smoke because she takes care of her body.

"I am a Playmate but I don't go to the mansion. I've been to one party for half-an-hour. I am going to a party this month and plan to stay longer. I do not go out much because if you do, you're no longer a mystery to people and they're over you," she said.

Did her high-profile appearance make men more intimidated of her than just any old hottie?

"I don't think appearing in Playboy changed the way men look at me. Men will look at an attractive woman whether she's in Playboy or not. There is nothing wrong with that. If I see an attractive man or woman, I look too. If men know you've been in Playboy, they put you on a higher status. Even for women, being a Playmate is huge."

Her advise to guys is, "Don't be nervous. Just try to come across as a confident man because women love confidence. If you see someone who is attractive but seems scared, that kills it right there. Don't be fake and phony. Don't come up with pickup lines. And smell good!"

Men should also invest a little TLC, she said.

"Be a little bit more romantic, treat the woman like a lady. Be more passionate and loving. It's not all about sex. Tell your woman she's beautiful, but be real about it, of course. Women love passion. We love soap operas. The male characters on soap operas tell women everything we want to hear. All the men reading this, go watch soap operas for a week."

Such steamy television, like Playboy, offends some Americans. Karen said she thinks the country is too obsessed with sex.

"I do think is a little crazy. You go to Europe and people are topless on the beaches. They're more liberal and don't care if they kiss 10 different men in one night. I wouldn't go that far. I think that is kind of wrong. But as far as skimpy outfit or sex on TV, there's nothing wrong with that. It's not a big deal. We MAKE it a big deal. We make things taboo."

She said she is comfortable with people associating her likeness with sex.

"Sure, why not? We all want to be sexy," she said. "If a girl tells you she would be offended for someone to think of her as a sex symbol, she's lying. It's nice to be the girl next door but sometimes I wake up wanting to be the vixen for the day. I would love a role in a movie with a dual-life kind of thing, like, the young, hip mother who turns into the sexy vixen at night. It would be fun to show who I really am and then act out the vixen role."

Karen the sex symbol offered some advice for lovers.

"The key to good foreplay is a lot of kissing and taking your time. Don't just have sex before she's ready. Before you park the car, you have to make sure the garage door is all the way up. Ask the woman what she wants. It's not always about you guys all the time. Find her hot spot. Kiss her back. I love to have my lower back kissed. If you start dirty talk, it can work into a fun and exciting night of sex," she said.

She described the kind of man who gets to enjoy that fun with her.

"I look for a guy who is down to earth, not a player, a positive person with morals and standards, and he has to be honest. He's got to be well-groomed, into working out and taking care of himself... nicely dressed. Usually it is the midwestern guys I am attracted to because they are down to earth. It's hard in L.A."

Somewhere out there, her Prince Charming can't wait to take her home to meet mom.
